Article – Is Life Bigger Than We Think?

Are We Really Alone in the Universe?

Many of us believe that our Earth is the only world that exists. But both modern science and ancient wisdom suggest that this may not be true. Today, scientists talk about multiple universes. And interestingly, Indian philosophies have believed in the idea of many worlds for thousands of years.

In Hinduism, there is the concept of 14 lokas or realms. These are divided into three parts — upper worlds (called Svarga or heavens), middle world (Prithvi or Earth), and lower worlds (Patal, considered hellish). Our Earth lies somewhere in the middle. The idea here is that there are many different planes of existence, not just the one we live in. This shows that the idea of many worlds is deeply rooted in Indian thinking.

Other Indian religions like Jainism and Buddhism also talk about various realms. For example, Buddhism describes six types of worlds where beings can be reborn — from divine worlds full of peace, to suffering worlds where beings like “hungry ghosts” exist. These teachings are not just myths. They teach us that our actions have consequences, not just in this life, but beyond.

Even in other parts of the world, this idea exists. Some interpretations of the Bible suggest that God may have created other worlds — some of which may no longer be around. So, whether it’s East or West, many spiritual traditions seem to agree that we may not be alone.

Now, science is also exploring these possibilities. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has captured images of thousands of galaxies — and that’s just from a small part of the sky! Each of these galaxies may have millions or even billions of planets. So it’s hard to believe Earth is the only place where life could exist.

Even though we may not have seen other worlds yet, humans have always imagined them. From ancient Puranic stories to modern science fiction movies, we’ve dreamt of parallel worlds, alien beings, and higher spiritual realms. Maybe that’s our way of understanding what we cannot yet see.

The best part is — you don’t need to follow any one religion to believe in this idea. Whether you’re spiritual, scientific, or just curious, it makes sense to accept that we may be just one small part of a much larger, connected universe.

And if that’s true, then our actions here and now become even more important. How we treat others, what we believe in, and how we live our life — all of it matters. We are not just passing time here. We are part of a much bigger story.

So, whether you believe in karma, rebirth, parallel universes, or life on other planets, one thing is certain — life has meaning. It’s a chance to learn, grow, and maybe even travel across many worlds, not just this one.
