Followers have long pronounced their leaders as gods to make their teachings absolute and unquestionable, even though the Buddha, Muhammad, and Confucius explicitly denied divinity. We draw on Hindu incarnation theology, Buddhist resistance to deification, Islamic insistence on monotheism, and how human becomes divine to anchor faith.
